Can Acupuncture Help Me?

The first thing to understand is that in terms of traditional acupuncture, you are unique. This is one of its underlying principles and it is for this reason there is no standard treatment. Two people with the same medical diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments.

Your treatment will be individually tailored to the symptoms you are experiencing alongside who you are. This is why the initial consultation is detailed. In it you can tell me all about your condition, and I will ask broader questions about your general health and life.

This holistic approach means the focus is on supporting your overall health alongside giving relief from your presenting complaint. This can include complementing medical treatments and alleviating side effects of medication.

A second principle of traditional acupuncture is illness and pain occur when the body's vital energy, or qi (pronounced chee), cannot flow freely. There can be many reasons for this; emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury are among the most common. Some conditions are hereditary. Your  treatment will always be aimed at resorting the flow of qi.

When someone is thinking about acupuncture I often suggest coming in for an initial consultation and treatment. You can and see how you find it and the information you give will allow me to make a working diagnosis. From there we can discuss options of how to work together if you want to.

How many treatments will I need?

For some people changes happen quite quickly and there may be a marked improvement after one or two treatments. For others it may take longer. With serious illness it may only be possible to alleviate some of the symptoms, and there may be a correlation between how long you have been unwell and the duration of treatment.

Because everyone is unique, and because the way you respond to your first treatment will be included as part of the diagnosis for the next treatment, it can be difficult to say how many you will need. One or two may be enough, however I often I suggest four or six sessions after which we can review progress.

Acupuncture is holistic which means your environment, and habits around work, eating, exercise and relaxation affect your health so identifying ways to support your health are often part of treatment. You might have ideas or I may give advice. With positive lifestyle changes you can expect to feel better for longer between treatments, not need to come so frequently, or complete treatment.
